Upon completion of study, one acquires the academic title of Doctor of Medicine.
The main task of the study program is to train students, future physicians, to practice independently in the primary health care system. The study also provides a basis for further, scientifically oriented education at postgraduate doctoral studies.
The subject matter from various scientific disciplines that students must adopt in the course of the study program is grouped into five groups of courses: general education, basic medical, preclinical, clinical and public health courses. The distribution of course subjects over the semesters allows optimal acquiring of the prescribed knowledge and skills (according to the Catalogue of Knowledge and Skills, adopted by all medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia), and supported by adapted teaching forms (lectures, seminars, practical classes, demonstrations, work at clinical departments, field practice and other). Students learn to solve specific problems by applying knowledge from different fields at the same time.
The study is completed with a final graduate examination (writing of the graduation thesis, final exam - test, public defence of the graduation thesis).
Requirements for enrolment
Requirements for enrolling into the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate Study of Medicine are regulated by the Study Program of the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek, Decision of the Senate of Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek and the Regulations of the University.
The ranking list for applicants' enrolment in the first year of study is drafted according to the scoring system, as follows:
Applicants who have completed a four-year secondary school education and passed the state graduation have the right to apply for the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Study of Medicine. The right to enrol into the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Study of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek is acquired by taking a place (position) on the classification list compiled according to the above-mentioned criteria.
Competencies students acquire upon completion of the study

A doctor of medicine must possess the knowledge and understanding of:
- Anatomy and function of the human body,
- Human psyche,
- Disease prevention, diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation,
- Social and environmental aspects of health and illness,
- Principles of ethics in medical theory and practice.
A doctor of medicine must possess the following skills:
- Taking a relevant medical history from the patient and documenting his/her status,
- Performing a differential diagnostic analysis based on medical history and examination of the patient,
- Performing specific procedures,
- Assessing emergency conditions and treatment of such conditions,
- Planning of appropriate therapy for common medical conditions.
A detailed inventory of specific knowledge and skills, as well as the level of competency for performance of certain skills are given for every course and harmonized on national level.
Upon completion of the Study of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, the graduates acquire the following, specially emphasized, general competencies:
- They have a broad base of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, qualifying them for any type of postgraduate education and collaboration with other specialists in the healthcare sector,
- They have received scientific education which enables scientific reasoning,
- They have developed attitudes in medical ethics,
- They are well-prepared for further developments and advances in medicine,
- They have acquired a systematic way of reasoning and a structured approach to medical problems in the course of their education,
- They meet the legal requirements for practicing the medical profession and for further education, and are ready to take on the responsibility related to medical profession,
- They possess the knowledge on appropriate diagnostic algorithms,
- They are capable of making appropriate decisions regarding therapy,
- They are familiar with the structure, organization and financing of the health care system,
- They are familiar with the process of conducting scientific research,
- They are able to act in accordance with rational scientific concepts and principles,
- They are familiar with scientific and theoretical concepts of biomedicine,
- They have an impartial attitude to new research processes in medicine,
- They are prepared to dedicate themselves to the medical profession and accept the responsibility for physical, psycho-mental and social well-being of their patients,
- They treat patients with respect, regardless of the patients' gender, age, race, social and economic status, education, culture, religion or beliefs,
- They respect the patients' rights to fully participate in the decision-making process regarding their treatment, including the patients' right to reject treatment or participation in teaching or research,
- They are able to express themselves and communicate in a manner which is understandable and acceptable to the patient,
- They demonstrate empathy with their patients in their psycho-social environment,
- They are ready to accept responsibility and make appropriate medical decisions,
- They have sufficient knowledge of health improvement and disease prevention and they demonstrate readiness to promote such attitudes in the medical profession,
- They have clearly formed attitudes and recognize their own limitations in accordance with their previous education and experience,
- They readily collaborate with other health care professionals,
- They are able to work successfully within a team and possess appropriate managing skills,
- They are committed to life-long learning and improvement in order to maintain the highest level of professional competence,
- They are willing to teach their colleagues and develop their own teaching skills,
- They embrace the quality assurance procedures and willingly accept occasional audits of their own medical competence and knowledge standards,
- They are willing to provide a constructive response to assessment outcome – both criticism and praise,
- They are prepared to consider the changes of socio-economic factors in patient treatment,
- They meet the legal standards related to their permanent theoretical and practical advancement.
Possibility of continuation of education
Upon completion of this study program, students may continue their education on the educational vertical in the field of Biomedicine and Health (MEFOS student mobility chart).
