Admission requirements

The conditions for enrolment to the Postgraduate specialist study of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine are regulated by the study programme of the Postgraduate specialist study of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine, the Rules for organising the Postgraduate specialist study of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine, the Statute of the Faculty of Medicine of Josip Juraj Strossmayer University in Osijek and the Ordinance on postgraduate studies at Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek.

 

A person who completed a corresponding university graduate study may enrol in a specialist course. The applications and the fulfilment of conditions for admission to specialist studies are considered by the Commission for Postgraduate Studies.

 

In accordance with the study programme of the Specialist study of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine, the following applicants are eligible for enrolment in the specialist study:

 

The residents of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine who enrol in the study as part of specialisation in the given area. The applicants from the Republic of Croatia and abroad who had completed the integrated undergraduate and graduate university study of medicine may enrol in the study under the same conditions.

 

The Commission for postgraduate studies appoints an expert commission for the recognition of a certain number of exams and the determination of the additional exams the applicant must pass for those candidates who have already passed equivalent exams, i.e., courses with an appropriate knowledge verification at doctoral or specialist studies of other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia and abroad.

 

The structure and organisation of the Postgraduate specialist study of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine

 

The structure of a specialist study is given in the study programme of the specialist study.

 

The study programme of the Postgraduate specialist study of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine comprises mandatory classes and a final specialist thesis.

 

To complete the study, each student must gain at least 60 ECTS credits. The total of 60 ECTS credits the student acquires upon completing the specialist study are distributed as follows:

 

A total of 40.0 ECTS credits for mandatory subjects of the Postgraduate specialist study of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine,

 

A total of 11.5 ECTS credits for mandatory common subjects of specialist studies,

 

A total of 8.5 ECTS credits for elective subjects of the Postgraduate specialist study of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine.

 

The Postgraduate specialist study of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine is completed after passing all exams and writing and defending a final specialist thesis in line with the study programme.

 

A student writes and defends the final specialist thesis after taking the classes and passing the exams of the specialist study.

 

The final specialist thesis is an independent paper by which students prove that they have acquired the specialised professional knowledge necessary to perform highly specialised jobs.

 

The Commission for postgraduate studies can recognise one paper published in a journal indexed in one of the international bibliographic databases as the equivalent of the student's final specialist thesis under the following conditions:

 

The paper is published or accepted for publication after the student began the specialist study and it is closely related to the area the student specialises in,

 

The student is the first or the corresponding author and the mentor is the co-author of the paper,

 

The paper is written in the form of an expert or scientific paper,

 

The paper serves as a qualification for only one student of a postgraduate specialist study,

 

The student undergoes the procedure for submission, evaluation and defending of the thesis in line with the provisions of the Rules for organising the Postgraduate specialist study of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine.

 

Academic title awarded upon completion of the studies

Upon completion of the study, one acquires the academic title of University Master of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine.

 

Competences acquired upon completing the studies:

Upon completion of the studies, the student acquires knowledge, skills and understanding of the methodology and application of anaesthesiology, reanimatology and intensive care medicine in the field of general anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia, immediate perioperative treatment, special anaesthesia and intensive treatment in neurosurgery and neurotraumatology, thoracic, cardiovascular, abdominal surgery, urology, gynaecology and obstetrics, paediatric surgery, orthopaedics and traumatology, ophthalmology, maxillofacial surgery, surgery, otorhinolaryngology, radiology, plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, outpatient and ambulatory surgery, anaesthesia for endoscopic procedures, pain treatment (acute and chronic), resuscitation in emergency medicine in hospital and outpatient conditions, monitoring and intensive treatment of respiratory and cardiac insufficiency, acute renal insufficiency, abdominal problems, acute liver failure, pancreatitis, traumatic brain injury, acute brain ischemia and treatment of neuromuscular diseases.

 

The student understands the methodology of solving clinical issues: disorders of consciousness, hypotension, respiratory failure, oliguria, pyrexia, arrhythmia, adverse environmental effects, severe infection, multiple organ failure syndrome, immunocompromised patient, bleeding/thrombosis, polytrauma, high-risk surgical patients, hypertension, poisoning.

 

The student acquires competence in performing the following skills and techniques: basic clinical examination, achieving/maintaining homeostasis, establishing an airway, prescribing and administering mechanical ventilation, parenteral and enteral nutrition, sedation, hemodynamic monitoring, respiration and organ function monitoring, reading clinical images, organising and guiding the transport of critical patients, organ donation and transplantation, implementation of infection control strategies.

 

The student acquires communication skills, skills for making ethical decisions about the end of life and palliative care, influences the organisation and management, cares for quality assurance and cost-effectiveness, monitors and improves clinical outcomes, conducts ongoing teaching and research.

 

Having acquired the aforementioned competences, the students have the possibility of employment in public and private health sector (anaesthesiology, resuscitation, intensive care medicine, emergency medicine, clinics for treatment of acute and chronic pain and palliative medicine).

 

Options for further education

Having completed this study, the students have the opportunity to continue their education at the Postgraduate doctoral study of Biomedicine and Health at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek, as well as at postgraduate doctoral studies at other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia.

A person who completed a corresponding university graduate study may enrol in a specialist course.

 

The applications and the fulfilment of conditions for admission to specialist studies are considered by the Commission for postgraduate studies.

 

In accordance with the study programme of the Specialist study of Neurology, the following applicants are eligible for enrolment in the specialist study:

 

the applicants from the Republic of Croatia and abroad who had completed the integrated undergraduate and graduate university study of medicine, under the condition that they are Neurology residents who are to enrol in the study as a part of specialisation in the given area or the interested Neurology specialists or Neurology residents from abroad.

 

The study is open to other medicine doctors who are motivated to complete the Postgraduate specialist study of Neurology.

 

The Commission for postgraduate studies appoints an expert commission for the recognition of a certain number of exams and the determination of the additional exams the applicant must pass for those candidates who have already passed equivalent exams, i.e., courses with an appropriate knowledge verification at doctoral or specialist studies of other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia and abroad.

Upon completion of the studies, the student also acquires specific competences related to theoretical and practical knowledge and skills necessary for clinical work as a specialist in neurology, i.e., the knowledge of:

the structure and function of individual elements of the central nervous system, the mapping of neurotransmitter systems and the neurobiology of learning and memory

a modern approach to a neurological patient, the specifics of taking a neurological anamnesis, heteroanamnesis, as well as neurological status

a modern approach to the diagnostics of neurological disorders and diseases and the treatment of neurological patients

conducting diagnostic procedures important for establishing a diagnosis and prescribing adequate therapy in emergency neurological conditions (neurological status, laboratory tests, lumbar puncture, neuroimaging methods), their critical evaluation and interpretation

treatment of emergencies in neurology

the most common neurological disorders of both childhood and adulthood, based on modern diagnostic processing and treatment protocols

the basic algorithms of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in neurology

the importance of genetic counselling and the possibility of early diagnosis for family planning and choosing adequate therapy during pregnancy

how to assess the type and severity of a neurological disorder based on medical history and the taken neurological status, judge the degree of urgency of further treatment and therapy, and how to choose an adequate individualised pharmacotherapy and treatment algorithm

epidemiology, clinical picture, diagnostics and treatment of the most common neurological disorders and diseases

diagnostic possibilities, limitations and indications of neurophysiological techniques (evoked potentials, EEG, EMNG, TCD and CDFI of carotid arteries) and interpretation of findings

neuroradiological diagnostic techniques in neurology and critical interpretation of findings

new findings in the field of experimental research in neurology as well as the ethical principles of research

the therapeutic indications and specifics of use of psychotropic drugs, possible ways of their use, side effects, interactions

how to make an assessment and early recognise the potential candidates for neurosurgical treatment, as well as the possibilities of preoperative treatment

Options for further education

 

Having completed this study, the students have the opportunity to continue their education at the Postgraduate doctoral study of Biomedicine and Health at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek, as well as at postgraduate doctoral studies of other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia.

 

The programme of the Ophthalmology and Optometry specialisation is set out in the Ordinance of the Ministry of Health and includes the obligatory postgraduate specialist study of the above area (Official Gazette no. 100/11). The purpose of the Postgraduate specialist study of Ophthalmology and Optometry is to acquaint applicants with the modern doctrine of clinical specialisation through theoretical and practical classes, encompassing basic, advanced and special knowledge of integral specialisation in ophthalmology and optometry. The applicants will also be presented with a critical review of experienced clinicians on current topics, with the intention of encouraging candidates to conduct clinical research and form their own clinical judgements.

The conditions for enrolment to the Postgraduate specialist study of Ophthalmology and Optometry are regulated by the study programme and the Rules for organising the Postgraduate specialist study of Ophthalmology and Optometry.

 

The issuing of a public invitation for application for the study and the enrolment of students are performed in accordance with the Statute of Josip Juraj Strossmayer University and of the Faculty of Medicine Osijek, the Regulation on Studies and Studying at Josip Juraj Strossmayer University and the Rules for organising the Postgraduate doctoral study of Ophthalmology and Optometry.

The applications and the fulfilment of conditions for admission to specialist studies are considered by the Commission for postgraduate studies.

In accordance with the study programme of the Postgraduate specialist study of Ophthalmology and Optometry, the applicants from the Republic of Croatia and abroad who had completed the integrated undergraduate and graduate university study of Medicine my enrol in the specialist study, in particular:

residents of Ophthalmology and Optometry from the Republic of Croatia, who are at least in their second year of residency and who enrol in the study as part of specialisation in the given area

Duration of the study

 

Postgraduate specialist study of Ophthalmology and Optometry lasts for 1 year, i.e., 2 semesters.

The structure and organisation of the Postgraduate specialist study of Ophthalmology and Optometry.

The structure of a specialist study is given in the study programme of the specialist study and comprises mandatory classes and a final specialist thesis.

To complete the study, each student must gain at least 60 ECTS credits based on the mandatory classes. During their studies, the students have to take and pass the following:

mandatory subjects of the Postgraduate specialist study of Ophthalmology and Optometry – a total of 46.0 ECTS credits

elective subjects of the Postgraduate specialist study of Ophthalmology and Optometry – a total of 9.0 ECTS credits (or 14.0 credits for completing the study as a part of specialisation)

write a final specialist thesis – a total of 5.0 ECTS credits – applicable to students who want to acquire an academic title in line with the Scientific Activity and Higher Education Act.

The Postgraduate specialist study of Ophthalmology and Optometry is completed after passing all exams and passing the corresponding final specialist exam in line with the study programme for students studying within the specialisation in Ophthalmology and Optometry, or by passing all the exams and writing a final specialist thesis for students studying outside the specified specialisation.

basic principles of surgical technique in ophthalmology

the importance of genetic counselling and the possibility of prenatal diagnostics with the purpose of family planning and preventing some genetic ophthalmic diseases

how to assess the type and severity of an eye injury based on medical history and the clinical examination, and how to choose an appropriate way for treating eye injuries and their prevention

how to initiate and determine adequate treatment modalities for ocular motility and binocular vision disorders

epidemiology, clinical picture, diagnostics and treatment of the most common pathological conditions of the posterior eye segment and the neuro-ophthalmology issues

all aspects of modern cataract and refractive surgery techniques and types of intraocular lenses

indications for performing an ultrasound examination of the eyeball and the eye orbit, as well as performing eye biometry and the interpretation of the findings

specificities of intravitreal application of ophthalmic medications

diagnostic imaging techniques in ophthalmology and optometry

new findings in the field of experimental research in ophthalmology, as well as the ethical principles of research

the operation of the modern eye bank, the types of eye tissue grafts, donor selection, collection, quality assessment, processing, storage, distribution and transplantation of eye tissue grafts, with special reference to the cornea

The structure of a specialist study is given in the study programme of the specialist study.

The study programme of the Postgraduate specialist study of General Internal Medicine comprises mandatory classes.

To complete the study, each student must gain at least 60 ECTS credits. The total of 60 ECTS credits the student acquires upon completing the specialist study are distributed as follows:

  • a total of 52.5 ECTS credits for mandatory subjects of the Postgraduate specialist study of General Internal Medicine
  • a total of 3.0 ECTS credits for elective subjects of the Postgraduate specialist study of General Internal Medicine
  • a total of 4.5 ECTS credits for the final specialist thesis.

The Postgraduate specialist study of General Internal Medicine is completed after passing all exams and passing the corresponding final specialist exam in line with the study programme.

A student takes the (final) specialist exam after taking the classes and passing the exams of the specialist study.

Teaching contents of equal value, i.e., subjects with an appropriate knowledge verification, chosen from doctoral and specialist studies of other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia are equally scored as the teaching contents at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek.

In order to transfer the ECTS points, students must complete all class duties, pass the theoretical and practical exams from other post-graduate doctoral studies and submit the documentation similar to the Diploma Supplement in European educational terminology (approximate contents, hours of active classes, forms of teaching, exam literature, manner of passing the exam, method of evaluation/assessment of knowledge, curriculum vitae of the head of the study).

Upon completion of the study, one acquires the academic title of University Master of General Internal Medicine.

 

Competences acquired upon completing the studies

 

Upon completion of the studies, the student acquires general competences in the areas of: communication skills, teamwork, scientific work, acquisition and transfer of knowledge, system management, professional development, ethics and regulations, health promotion.

Upon completion of the studies, the student also acquires specific competences related to theoretical and practical knowledge and skills necessary for clinical work as a specialist in general internal medicine. This encompasses mastering the prescribed diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and methods of prevention and rehabilitation of diseases of internal organs.

 

Options for further education

 

Having completed this study, the students have the opportunity to continue their education at the Postgraduate doctoral study of Biomedicine and Health at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek, as well as at postgraduate doctoral studies of other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia.

Admission requirements

 

The conditions for enrolment to the Postgraduate specialist study of Ultrasound in clinical Medicine: specialisation in Ultrasound in Cardiology are regulated by the study programme of the Postgraduate specialist study of Ultrasound in clinical Medicine: specialisation in Ultrasound in Cardiology, the Rules for organising the Postgraduate specialist study of Ultrasound in clinical Medicine: specialisation in Ultrasound in Cardiology, and the Ordinance on postgraduate studies at Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek.

A person who completed a corresponding university graduate study may enrol in a specialist course. The applications and the fulfilment of conditions for admission to specialist studies are considered by the Commission for postgraduate studies.

In accordance with the study programme of the Specialist study of Ultrasound in clinical Medicine: specialisation in Ultrasound in Cardiology, the following applicants are eligible for enrolment in the specialist study:

applicants from the Republic of Croatia and abroad who had completed the integrated undergraduate and graduate university study of medicine, hold an intern medicine and/or cardiology specialisation or currently are residents thereof.

Besides, the residents/specialists of other studies (paediatricians, anaesthesiologists) may enrol in the study.

The Commission for postgraduate studies appoints an expert commission for the recognition of a certain number of exams and the determination of the additional exams the applicant must pass for those candidates who have already passed equivalent exams, i.e., courses with an appropriate knowledge verification at doctoral or specialist studies of other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia and abroad.

The structure and organisation of the Postgraduate specialist study of Ultrasound in clinical Medicine: specialisation in Ultrasound in Cardiology:

The structure of a specialist study is given in the study programme of the specialist study.

The study programme of the Postgraduate specialist study of Ultrasound in clinical Medicine: specialisation in Ultrasound in Cardiology comprises mandatory classes, practical training and a final specialist thesis.

To complete the study, each student must gain at least 60 ECTS credits. The total of 60 ECTS credits the student acquires upon completing the specialist study are distributed as follows:

a total of 30.0 ECTS credits for the organised classes (mandatory and elective, awarded 25.0 ECTS credits and 5.0 ECTS credits, respectively)

a total of 24.0 ECTS credits for the practical training classes

A total of 6.0 ECTS credits for the final thesis.

The Postgraduate specialist study of Ultrasound in clinical Medicine: specialisation in Ultrasound in Cardiology is completed after passing all exams and writing and defending a final specialist thesis in line with the study programme. A student writes and defends the final specialist thesis after taking the classes and passing the exams of the specialist study.

The final specialist thesis is an independent paper by which students prove that they have acquired the specialised professional knowledge necessary to perform highly specialised jobs.

 

Academic title awarded upon completion of the studies

 

Upon completion of the study, one acquires the academic title of University Master of Echocardiography.

 

Competences acquired upon completing the studies

 

Upon completion of the studies, students will be qualified for highly professional work in the field of echocardiography, which encompasses a number of areas and activities. The applicant can focus on a narrower field of echocardiography by attending courses in transesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography and tissue Doppler echocardiography.

Having acquired the above competences, the students have the possibility of employment in public and private health sector in various workplaces that include highly professional engagement in the field of echocardiography.

Admission requirements

 

Cardiology resident, attending at least the second year of specialisation or a cardiology specialist.

The study is open to other students who are motivated to complete the Postgraduate specialist study of Cardiology.

Applicants from the Republic of Croatia and abroad may enrol in the study under equal conditions.

The enrolment into the postgraduate study is done on the basis of a public call for interest the conditions of which are published in daily press, on the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek and the University of Josip Juraj Strossmayer websites, as well as the websites of institutions where the classes are held.

To enrol in the first year of the specialist study one must submit the following documents/statements:

the form of the faculty for enrolment in the specialist study

the official transcript of grades (of the completed six-year doctor of medicine study programme)

the decision of the Ministry of Health on the specialisation

The students are selected in a public procedure, after the analysis of the above documents/statements.

Upon completion of the studies, the students shall acquire a modern knowledge of:

- epidemiology, clinical picture, diagnostics and treatment of the most common cardiovascular diseases

- the most common cardiovascular illnesses of both childhood and adulthood, based on modern diagnostic processing and treatment protocols

- a modern approach to a cardiovascular patient, the specifics of taking a cardiovascular anamnesis, heteroanamnesis, as well as the assessment of the cardiovascular status based on an examination

- the ability to estimate the type and severity of a cardiovascular disease based on medical history and the clinical examination, and how to choose an adequate individualised pharmacotherapy and treatment algorithm

- the modern approach to the diagnostics of cardiovascular diseases and taking care of cardiovascular patients

- the basic algorithms of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in cardiology

- conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests important for establishing a diagnosis and prescribing adequate therapy

- treatment of emergencies in cardiology

- diagnostic imaging techniques in cardiology and critical interpretation of findings

- the therapeutic indications and specifics of use of drugs in cardiology, possible ways of their use, side effects, interactions

- the types, possibilities and predictable outcomes of cardiac rehabilitation

Fostering the students’ mobility

 

The study is open to all students who can understand the classes in Croatian language. The agreement of the deans of medical faculties on the establishment of a network of postgraduate studies in the field of biomedicine and health enables students of the Postgraduate specialist study of Cardiology to attend organised classes of related programmes at postgraduate studies of other medical faculties in the Republic of Croatia.

This study is open to foreign students as well. Namely, in line with the law, the applicants from the Republic of Croatia and abroad who have obtained a graduate degree in medicine, may enrol in the Postgraduate specialist study of Cardiology under equal conditions. The application of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) certainly encourages student mobility.

 

The connection of the study to the modern scientific discoveries

 

The purpose of the specialist study is to acquaint the applicants through lectures and seminars with the modern doctrine of clinical specialisation. The applicants will also be presented with a critical review of experienced clinicians on current topics, with the intention of encouraging candidates to conduct clinical research and form their own clinical judgements.
